St Stephen's Reaches Out

St Stephen's is committed to reach out to the community and wider world- 'opening up the world, we will celebrate our Father (God's) wonderous, diverse creation'.

We are currently working towards out Global Neighbours Bronze Award which involves reaching out beyond our school...

Global Neighbours

Our school is part of the Christian Aid Global Neighbours accreditation scheme and we are currently working for our Bronze Award. The Bronze Award reflects the work the children have undertaken to improve their knowledge and understanding of global issues. The accreditation scheme celebrates schools that are helping pupils learn about global poverty and our Christian responsibility to tackle it. We at St. Stephen’s want to give our pupils the tools and confidence to become global advocates for change in the world and play their part in making the world a fairer one.

Christian Aid’s Global Neighbour’s accreditation scheme is first and foremost about children; their needs and aspirations, their character, and their hopes for the world in which they are growing up.

Theirs is an increasingly globalised and interconnected world in which everyday lives and local communities cannot be fully understood without reference to a wider global picture. On the one hand, it is full of wonder and the possibilities and opportunities afforded by technology. On the other hand, it is marked by division, extreme inequality, injustice, and poverty, conflict and environmental crises. Even the youngest in our schools bring with them knowledge of injustice, disadvantage and conflict, gleaned through the media, and often, direct personal experience. With that very partial knowledge, they also bring into school a complex set of questions, concerns and emotions.

The good news is that our school can provide a much – needed safe space and structure in which children can begin to make sense of the world they are encountering and explore their place within it. We aim to nurture the values, attitudes, understanding and skills so our children may realise their hopes and aspirations for a more just and sustainable world in which we live well together, at local, national and global levels.

The Global Neighbours scheme supports any aspiring school to:

  1. Develop global citizenship/ courageous advocacy
  2. Advance the spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development of its pupils
  3. Strengthen its promotion of fundamental British values
  4. Enhance its religious education (RE)
  5. Promote critical thinking across the curriculum
  6. Strengthen links with the local community

Harvest Appeal 2022

This year the children and families of St Stephen's, Tockholes decided they would give their Harvest Appeal donations to Darwen Food Larder.

Below is a letter of thanks from them.

Dear Friends at St. Stephen’s Church and St. Stephen’s Primary School,

Thank you all very much indeed for the kind and generous donations which you made to Darwen Food Larder this Harvest time, and particularly for your support over recent years.  Our stocks have increased considerably, thanks to you, and will help a large number of people in the coming months.

With best wishes and gratitude,

Everyone at Darwen Food Larder

We were delighted to welcome back members from the Bolton Mountain Rescue Team to present them with their cheque following our fundraising efforts over the year. All in all we raised a fantastic amount of £1480.00, which is our greatest ever total for a charity. Well done and thank you to everyone who supported us with our fundraising efforts this year and a special thank you to the School Council and Mrs Walmsley for all of your hard work this year.
