Modern Foreign Languages Intent:

At St. Stephen's, we teach MFL to develop our pupils into confident and competent linguists, motivated to learn languages as they transition into the next stage of their education and beyond. We believe that the learning of a foreign language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for all pupils. Our curriculum not only aims to develop the pupils’ communication and literacy skills in the learning of a foreign language but also aims to foster a real enjoyment of speaking another language. By the end of their time at St. Stephen's, we want our pupils to want to choose and further their language education in Key Stage 3 and beyond. We want them to understand the many benefits of learning a language and the opportunities this can offer them in the wider world. We also want them to gain a deeper understanding of our multilingual and multicultural world so that they can become responsible global citizens in part of God's Big World.
